Tracing Dutch Emigration to Canada from the
19th Century to the Present
For centuries, Dutch migrants have found new beginnings in Canada. Small groups arrived as early as the 1600s. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Dutch farmers and workers continued to travel overseas, attracted by land and job opportunities. Migration surged after the Second World War and the 1953 North Sea flood, as large numbers of Dutch people emigrated to North America.
In the exposition From Polders to Prairies, this long history, as well as many personal stories of Dutch migration to Canada, is presented. It is a testimony to the close collaboration between the Dutch and Canadian governments and organizations, and it reflects the deep bonds between our two nations that continue today.
